This session is only for Creative Mentors on The Mighty Creatives’ Creative Mentoring Pool.

In response to the Creative Mentoring Support Survey, we have worked hard to craft a training programme that responds to the needs of the Creative Mentors. We hope you find the sessions inspiring.

This session is in addition to our previous two sessions that took place in the Summer of 2024, exploring the experiences of Separated Children (also known as children from overseas, or Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children).

You wouldn’t of needed to attend the first two sessions to attend this one, as it is a stand alone session.

Context of the Session

As a country, Separated Children (also known as Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Children) make up a large population of our cohort of care experienced children and young people.

It’s important to note as Creative Mentors that we may be working with a young person who identifies as a Separated Child, and it’s important we have some understanding of what their lived experiences may have been, and how these differ from our understandings of other care experienced children and young people.

Whilst our approach will be similar, we need to understand the nuances.

In this session, you will explore the importance of Belonging for our Separated Children by looking at:

  • Our own understandings of what we mean by ‘Belonging’ and when we have felt like we truly belong in school and work,
  • The importance of Belonging for our Separated Children now, particularly within our current political climate,
  • How we, through the creative practice of Creative Mentoring, can build, and in some cases re-build, a sense of Belonging for our children and young people,
  • How we can use our role as Creative Mentors to advocate for the child/young person’s need for a sense of Belonging.

We hope by the end of the session

You will have a clearer understanding on how best to work with your Creative Mentees who are Separated Children and how to maximise your time working together on your Creative Mentoring journey.
