Self-awareness is an important skill for anyone, but for those of us who work with emotionally vulnerable young people, it is crucial.
When the sharing of a relationship is at the heart of a practice – as is the nature of Creative Mentoring – it can thus be difficult to decipher what belongs in that ‘shared space’, and what belongs exclusively to ‘the self’: what you own and are individually responsible for, e.g. your feeling about your mentee, the time you spend with them and what may come up emotionally for you as a result.
Unfortunately, self-awareness is not innate; it doesn’t manifest itself without conscious effort. However, with intentional practice, we can all cultivate a more self-aware disposition as we tread the sometimes delicate path alongside our Creative Mentee.
Self-awareness helps us to practice effectively: to manage our boundaries, to regulate our emotions, to switch off when we need to, to develop control of our thoughts and feelings, to understand what is – and isn’t – within our power.
As well as exploring the important role of self-awareness in relationship-based practice, this session will share practical approaches and strategies you can use in your everyday life to become a more self-aware and self-reflective version of yourself, within – and beyond – your role as a creative mentor.
Please note this training is optional for creative mentors.
