This session is only for Creative Mentors on The Mighty Creatives’ Creative Mentoring Pool.

In response to the Creative Mentoring Support Survey, we have worked hard to craft a training programme that responds to the needs of the Creative Mentors. We hope you find the sessions inspiring.

This is the first part in a 2 part series, exploring the experiences of children from overseas, as well as best practice when working with them.

Context of the Session

As a country, children from overseas (also known as Unaccompanied Asylum-Seeking Children) make up a large population of our cohort of care experienced children and young people.

It’s important to note as Creative Mentors that we may be working with a young person who identifies as a Child from Overseas and it’s important we have some understanding of what their lived experiences may have been, and how these differ from our understandings of other care experienced children and young people.

Whilst our approach will be similar, we need to understand the nuances.

In this session, you will explore

  • The potential impacts lived experiences of a UASC young person could have on their behaviors and relationships,
  • The ongoing challenges and also strengths they may display because of their lived experiences,
  • Some practical tips on best practice when working with UASC young people.

The previous session will have explored key terminology and common lived experiences of children from overseas/UASC young people.

We hope by the end of the session

You will have a clearer understanding on how best to work with your Creative Mentees who are UASC young people and how to maximise your time working together on your Creative Mentoring journey.
