This free training event is for The Mighty Creatives’ Mighty Employer network, a team of employers working with us to create and support young employability within a range of sectors.

About the Session: Strengthening Strengths – Understanding Strength Based Practice

We all know the part of ourselves that focuses on perceived weaknesses, whether that’s our own or other people’s; it’s a natural part of being human. In education or the workplace for example, identifying gaps and deficits can be an essential part of developing people, so we can help them build the skills and competencies they need.

But there can be a disadvantage to this approach, as well. Well intentioned as we may be, when we put more of our energies into the deficits than we do the strengths, it can serve to reinforce them; the person developed a stronger sense of what their shortcomings are, making it difficult to build resilience, perseverance, and self-belief.

Counterintuitive as it can feel, when we are less concerned with what’s wrong, and instead amplify what’s right – the unique gifts and attributes that a person brings – it can have a transformational affect; on motivation, on self-belief, determination, the willingness to take risks, problem-solve and the commitment to one’s own development.

This session takes a closer look at the ‘strengths-based approach’; what it is, how we can use it to balance out the (sometimes necessary) attention that goes on their deficits, and how we can most effectively unlock the innate, and often hidden potential that your young employees have to offer.

The session will be delivered by Jo Stockdale from Well Within Reach. Find out more about Jo and her work below.

The training session itself will be 2 hours long, followed by a 30 minute Q&A discussion session with Jo and other network members.
