“It’s helped me a lot, it’s calmed my temperament down, it’s helped my emotions and channel my anger and emotions to come out in the right way” – Post-16 Mentee
Most care leavers move to independent living between 16-18 and are expected to undertake their journey to adulthood far younger, and in far less time, than their peers.
Too many young people leave care with poor educational attainment, which leads to long term unemployment. Care leavers are more likely to feature high worklessness, criminality and mental ill-health statistics, and to have children that go into care.
Support from a Creative Mentor can give these vulnerable young people better life chances. Developing trust, building self-esteem and having a consistent adult in their lives who can advocate for them is extremely valuable during this difficult age.
As a partnership, Creative Mentors co-design the work together with the young people to ensure they have a decisive influence on the direction of the work and so gain control to over their own futures as they transition from care to independent living and the working world. With improved skills, participants are supported to re-engage in further education and explore pathways into further employment, education or training.
The Mighty Creatives offer Creative Mentoring as a commissioned service on a case-by-case basis using Pupil Premium Plus or wider social care support funding. We also provide fully and part-funded opportunities for those children who do not have access to additional funding.
