what was the power of the arts video project about?

Commissioned by Leicestershire Virtual School, this project brought together a mix of energy, creativity and youth voice to capture the Power of the Arts for young care-experienced people through the medium of film.

Art makes me feel, no, it truly makes me feel. I used to be empty, lost, bare but that gap is now filled and art is there.” – Young Person [a quote from the poem produced in the spoken word workshop]

what happened next?

To capture footage of the young people engaging in the arts, we sent an experienced filmmaker along to various different creative activities run by Leicestershire Virtual School and their partners. From forest school activities and a dance class to a spoken word workshop, this footage was edited by the filmmaker to create an uplifting short video. In fact, the young people created a poem in the spoken word workshop which was used in the final video, alongside songs created by the young people and other audio snippets.

An island of colour floating in a sea of possibility, the ultimate escape.” – Young Person [a quote from the poem produced in the spoken word workshop]

what was the outcome of this project?

Well, of course the final video tells the stories of the young people! But it also shows the powerful impact that arts, culture and creative experiences has on Leicestershire Virtual School’s young people – and the power it holds for them.

I feel really happy doing this, it makes me feel like I can make my own story.” – Young Person [quote from the video]
